Attaching skills to an agent

Learn what skills are, why they make your agents smarter, and the two ways to attach them — from the agent edit page or directly from a file.

Skills are the knowledge files your agent draws on when answering questions or completing tasks. They live in your Skills Library, and you attach them to individual agents. An agent with the right skills is more focused, more accurate, and far more useful than one working from its system prompt alone.

What skills are and why they matter

Think of a skill as a briefing document for your agent. It could be a set of brand guidelines, a coding standard, an FAQ, an SOP, or any piece of knowledge you want the agent to have in hand whenever it's working.

When you attach a skill to an agent, that content becomes part of the agent's context. Ask the agent a question, and it can draw on what's in its skills — not just the general knowledge the underlying AI model was trained on.

This is what separates a generic AI assistant from one that actually knows your product, your team's conventions, and your specific requirements.

A few practical examples:

  • A Customer Support agent attached to your product FAQ and refund policy handles real support questions accurately.
  • A Code Reviewer agent attached to your engineering standards and linting rules gives feedback that matches what your team actually cares about.
  • A Content Writer agent attached to your brand voice guide and style sheet produces copy that sounds like your brand, not a generic AI.

Skills are reusable — you can attach the same skill to multiple agents. Update the skill once and every agent that uses it gets the updated version automatically.

How to attach skills from the agent edit page

  1. Go to Dashboard → Agents.
  2. Find the agent you want to update and click its name to open it, then click Edit — or click the agent row to open the quick drawer, then click Open Full Editor.
  3. In the full editor, click Manage Skills.
  4. A panel lists all the skills available in your workspace. Check the box next to each skill you want to attach.
  5. Click Save (or Done, depending on your view) to confirm your selection.

The agent's skill count updates in the agents list to reflect how many skills are now attached.

Tip: If the skill you need doesn't exist yet, go to Dashboard → Skills and create it first. You can come back and attach it to your agent afterwards.

How to attach skills from a file's agents sidebar

When you're working inside a file, you'll often want to quickly assign a skill to the agent you're using without leaving the file.

  1. Open any file in your workspace.
  2. Look for the Agents sidebar panel on the right side of the editor.
  3. Find the agent you want to update in the sidebar.
  4. Click Manage Skills (or the skills icon) next to that agent.
  5. Select the skills to attach and confirm.

This is the fastest way to attach skills when you're already in a working session and realise the agent is missing some context.

The skill count badge

On the Agents list page, each agent row shows a small badge with the number of skills currently attached (for example, 3 skills). This gives you a quick at-a-glance view of how well-equipped each agent is. An agent with zero skills is working from its system prompt alone — useful for some roles, but often a sign that it could be more effective with some knowledge attached.
